Understanding Hypertension:


Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a common health condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It occurs when the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently too high, which can cause damage to the blood vessels and organs over time. Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and other chronic conditions. 


Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure is the pressure when the heart beats, while diastolic pressure is the pressure when the heart is at rest between beats. A normal blood pressure reading is around 120/80 mmHg. 


Hypertension is diagnosed when blood pressure readings are consistently higher than 130/80 mmHg. There are two main types of hypertension: primary hypertension and secondary hypertension. Primary hypertension, also known as essential hypertension, is the most common type and has no identifiable cause. Secondary hypertension is caused by an underlying condition, such as kidney disease, sleep apnea, or hormonal disorders. 


Hypertension often has no symptoms, which is why it's often called the ”silent killer.” However, some people may experience symptoms such as headaches, shortness of breath, and nosebleeds. If left untreated, hypertension can cause serious damage to the blood vessels and organs, including the heart, kidneys, brain, and eyes. 


There are several risk factors for hypertension, including age, family history, obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, stress, and certain medical conditions. Hypertension is more common in older adults, African Americans, and people with a family history of the condition. 


Prevention and management of hypertension is essential for maintaining good health and preventing serious complications. Lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, reducing salt intake, exercising regularly, and quitting smoking can help lower blood pressure and prevent hypertension. In addition to lifestyle changes, medications such as diuretics, ACE inhibitors, and calcium channel blockers can be prescribed to control blood pressure.
