Patient Information Leaflet: Amoxicillin

What is Amoxicillin?

Amoxicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin group. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.

Uses:

Amoxicillin is prescribed for various infections, including:


Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)

Ear, nose, and throat infections

Urinary tract infections

Skin and soft tissue infections

Dental infections

Lyme disease

As part of combination therapy for H. pylori eradication


How to take Amoxicillin:


Take as prescribed by your doctor.

Can be taken with or without food.

Space doses evenly throughout the day.

Complete the entire course, even if you feel better.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for your next dose.


Dosage:

Dosage varies depending on the infection and patient factors. Common adult dosages range from 250mg to 500mg every 8 hours, or 750mg to 1g every 12 hours.

Precautions:

Severe or persistent diarrhea

Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Unusual bleeding or bruising

No improvement in symptoms after a few days


Remember:


Amoxicillin only treats bacterial infections, not viral infections like colds or flu.

Taking antibiotics when not needed can lead to antibiotic resistance.

Always complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if you feel better.
