However, naproxen sodium has a longer duration of action, with effects lasting up to 12 hours. This extended relief makes it particularly useful for managing chronic pain conditions or situations where longer-lasting pain relief is desired.

One key difference between these medications is their dosing schedule. Due to its shorter duration of action, ibuprofen is typically taken every 4-6 hours as needed, with a maximum daily dose of 1200mg for over-the-counter use. Naproxen sodium, on the other hand, is usually taken every 8-12 hours, with a maximum daily dose of 660mg for over-the-counter use. This less frequent dosing can be more convenient for some users and may improve adherence to the medication regimen.

In terms of effectiveness, both ibuprofen and naproxen sodium are generally comparable for treating mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation. However, some studies suggest that naproxen sodium might be slightly more effective for certain types of pain, such as menstrual cramps and arthritis-related discomfort. Ibuprofen, with its quicker onset of action, may be preferred for acute pain relief or fever reduction.

Side effect profiles for both medications are similar, as they belong to the same drug class. Common side effects include stomach upset, heartburn, and an increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. However, naproxen sodium may have a slightly higher risk of gastrointestinal side effects compared to ibuprofen, particularly when used long-term or in higher doses.
