First Aid: 5 Essential Steps
Assess the situation: Ensure the area is safe before approaching. Check the victim's responsiveness and call for emergency help if needed.
Check breathing and circulation: If the person is unresponsive, check for breathing. If not breathing normally, begin CPR immediately.
Control bleeding: For severe bleeding, apply direct pressure using a clean cloth or sterile gauze. Elevate the injured area if possible.
Treat for shock: Have the person lie down, elevate their legs if safe to do so, and keep them warm with a blanket.
Provide care for specific injuries: Address burns, fractures, or other injuries appropriately until professional help arrives. For burns, cool with water; for fractures, immobilize the area.
